    IP-Chicago and burbs:arfmax:2016

Started out 2016 by going to an event at a local library, where former LA Kings and New Jersey Devils defenseman Peter Harrold was meeting and signing autographs. He currently plays for the Chicago Wolves, the St. Louis Blues AHL team. Mr. Harrold signed a card and an 8x10, for free, in Prospect Heights, IL.

    31-Jan-2016 (Brewers On Deck)

Yesterday, I spent the day at Brewers On Deck at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Brewers are in a rebuild mode, so they have traded away a lot of players, and others are on the block. So, not too many 'name' players, and a lot of prospects. It was a long day, however, I think I got more autos at this one than the last two years I have gone.

Coaches: I got 2 autos on cards from coach Jason Lane, 2 autos on cards from hitting coach Darnell Coles, 2 autos on cards from manager Craig Counsell, 1 autograph on a card from bullpen catcher Marcus Hanel, 1 auto on a card from coach Joe Crawford, 1 auto on a card from coach Matt Erickson. (9 autos) The Brewers also have these 5x7 cards made of everyone for autographs, and so I also got one promo 5x7 of pitching coach Derek Johnson, coach Pat Murphy, coach Carlos Subero, coach Lee Tunnell, coach Ed Sedar, hitting coach Darnell Coles, and coach Jason Lane. (7 autos)
    Photo of the coaches autos:
    http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/...psd3wewqjv.jpg

Alumni: I got 3 autos on cards from alumni Larry Hisle, 1 autograph on a card from alumni Ken Sanders + a promo 5x7 auto, 2 autos on cards from alumni Don August + a promo 5x7 auto, 1 autograph on a card from alumni Gorman Thomas, and 1 auto on a card from alumni Jerry Augustine. (10 autos)
    Photo of the alumni autos:

Pitchers: I got an auto on an 8x10 of pitching prospect Yhonathan Barrios and an 8x10 signed by pitching prospect Junior Guerra. I got 2 cards signed by pitching prospect Adrian Houser, 2 cards signed by pitching prospect Jorge Lopez, 2 cards signed by pitcher David Goforth, 2 cards signed by pitching prospect Josh Hader + 2 promo 5x7 autos, and 1 card signed by pitching prospect Jacob Barnes + 2 promo 5x7 autos. (15 autos)

Players: 2 autos on cards from prospect Michael Reed, 2 autos on cards from prospect Colin Walsh, 2 autos on cards from prospect Garin Cecchini, 2 autos on cards from former Astro Jonahan Villar, 2 autos on cards from prospect Keon Broxton + a promo 5x7 auto, 2 autos on cards from prospect Brett Phillips, 2 autos on cards from prospect Clint Coulter + a promo 5x7 auto, 2 autos on cards from Brewers 2015 1st round draft pick Trent Clark + a promo 5x7 auto, and 1 auto on a card from prospect Ramon Flores + a promo 5x7 auto. (21 autos)

Did not get Bob Uecker (premier auto that you had to win a lottery for), Matt Garza (who was supposed to sign for free and didn't show up at his signing table, but was there), and alumni Greg Vaughn and Jeff Cirillo, who were free at a separate stage but required vouchers, which I didn't know about. Oh, and top prospect Orlando Arcia was sick and didn't attend.

Still, ended up getting 62 autos, with a lot of guys that hopefully will be in the majors sometime soon.

Yesterday, I went to an appearance and book signing by former Duke star and #2 overall pick of the Chicago Bulls, Jay Williams. Jay has written a book called Life Is Not An Accident, which details his horrific motorcycle crash after his rookie year, his addiction to pain killers, his surgeries, his broadcasting, and more. He spoke and answered questions for about 45 minutes, and then signed autographs. I had him sign two of his books, and 3 cards.

Today I went to the grand opening celebration for Bob's Discount Furniture in Skokie, IL. They opened 6 stores this week, and at each store, there are two former Chicago Bears players. I was able to get 1 autograph on a card from former offensive lineman James "Big Cat" Williams, and 6 autos on cards and 1 auto on a promo 5x7 from corner cornerback Nathan Vasher, all for free.

Today I went to the grand opening celebration for Bob's Discount Furniture in Burbank, IL. They opened 6 stores this week, and at each store, there are two former Chicago Bears players. I was able to get 5 autographs on cards and 1 auto on a promo 5x7 photo from former tight end James "Robocop" Thornton, and 2 autos on cards (1 smeared so he resigned over it) and 1 8x10 photo signed by former tight end Emery Moorehead, all for free. Also met up with fellow SCF member @djauwerda

    20-Feb-2016 (Chicago Auto Show)

Today I went to the Chicago Auto Show, billed as the nation's largest auto show, in the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago. This is the last weekend of the show, and there were a handful of autograph guests today, as there tends to be on the weekends. Today was Brian Urlacher, Kevin White (Bears rookie WR), Bobby Portis (Bulls rookie), and Scott Sanderson (former Cub). Urlacher was a bit before the others started signing, but the other three were scheduled for the same time, so I was a little concerned, but Portis was an hour and a half late, so I was able to get into all the lines.

For Urlacher, I was able to get two cards signed:
    http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3oojkkda.jpg

I then went to wait for Kevin White, and when he got there, they informed us that he would not be signing anything but the promo photo they provided. When I got to him, he said that he had contracts with Topps and Panini, so he couldn't sign any cards. He was able to sign 8x10's that people brought, but wouldn't sign any mini helmets or anything else. It was odd.
Photo of the Kevin White auto:
    http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/...psezji62hv.jpg

I then checked on Bobby Portis, but he hadn't shown, so I went to former Chicago Cubs pitcher Scott Sanderson. I had him sign three cards:
    http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/...psih3cqf2c.jpg

Went back to the Bobby Portis line, and he hadn't arrived yet. He finally got there an hour and a half later than scheduled, however, would not sign anything other than these 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 flimsy promo cards, again, due to a contract. I got one of those:
    http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/...psdhpyldxp.jpg

All in all, I was glad to get Urlacher although I have gotten him a few times this year, so it wasn't my priority, and I was happy to upgrade my 1987 Topps of Sanderson to a blue IP auto, however, only signing these specific items at the auto show has gotten to be a disturbing trend. It happened in years past for Alshon Jeffery, Frank Thomas, and last weekend for Anthony Rizzo. I understand the desire to advertise your car manufacturer or cable provider, but it really stinks when you bring things.

Today, I went to a local food store where they were having an event called Cooking with the Blackhawks, which featured young center Phillip Danault of the Blackhawks. After a demonstration of healthy cooking, I was able to get 5 autos of Mr. Danault, on cards, for free.
