    January 11th, 1972: Bill France Sr, the founder of Nascar, steps down as Nascar President and gives the control of the sport to his son, Bill France Jr.




    January 11th, 2017: Driver Carl Edwards surprises all of the Nascar world and abruptly retires, citing happiness with his career and wanting to do other things and spend time with his family, vacating his #19 to Daniel Suarez-who becomes the first Mexican driver to be in Nascar's top series. Edwards leaves behind 28 career wins and 4 runner up points finishes in Nascar's elite series.

    January 16th, 1949: Marshall Teague wins the opening race of the Nascar season by driving his 1939 Ford to the win in the Nascar modified division race. Only 38 of the 75 cars that started the event finish the race.

    Winners on this date: Dan Gurney.

    January 17th, 1965: Dan Gurney wins the 500 mile race at Riverside for the 2nd straight year. The race is overshadowed by a tragedy at the track when a 20 year old is killed when a forklift in the infield overturns, crushing him :(





    January 17th, 1981: Richard Petty tests a Dodge Mirada at Daytona, trying out something new in regards to the new wheelbase rules established for 1981. Petty is unable to run competitive speeds in the car.

    Today in Nascar History January 18th:

    Winners on this date: A.J. Foyt and David Pearson.

    January 18th, 1970: Open wheel standout A.J. Foyt beats Roger McCluskey to win the Nascar season opener at the Riverside Road Course in California. Dan Gurney, a 5 time winner of the race, finishes is the 6th position.

    Cup Winners on this date: Dan Gurney, Bobby Allison, and Darrell Waltrip.

    January 19th, 1964: Dan Gurney destroys the competition and laps the field to win the 500 miler at Riverside. Joe Weatherly, the defending 2 time National champion, perishes when he crashes into a guardrail during the event :( Weatherly's death would lead to advancements in developing the window net since during his crash he was killed by his head smashing into the railing through the window opening.

    Today in Nascar History January 20th:

    Winners on this date: Tim Flock, Dan Gurney, and Cale Yarborough.

    January 20th, 1952: Tim Flock wins the season opener in West Palm Beach. Bernard Alvarez escapes injury when his car flips upside down and the roof collapses during the race. After his accident Nascar requires that all cars have steel roll bars.




    January 20th, 1963: Dan Gurney beats AJ Foyt to win at Riverside. The race takes almost 6 hours to complete in the warm California sun.



    January 20th, 2011: Nascar brings back Pre-season testing at Daytona International Speedway and allows the teams to test the brand new pavement job at the speedway in a sanctioned test for the first time.

    January 20th, 2012: Nascar officially enshrines the 3rd class of the Nascar Hall of Fame-Glen Wood, Dale Inman, Richie Evans, Cale Yarborough, and Darrell Waltrip are all honored.



    January 20th, 2017: The 2017 class of the Nascar Hall of Fame is officially inducted. Rick Hendrick, Richard Childress, Mark Martin, Raymond Parks, and Benny Parsons join the names in the hall.
