January 21st, 1973: Penske driving ace Mark Donohue takes a surprising victory in the season opening 500 miler at Riverside. Donohue's first career Cup win comes in only his 5th start, driving a Matador.
January 21st, 2010: Nascar announces a few new rules for 2010 including a move back to the rear spoiler replacing the wing and allowing drivers to bump draft with no guidelines at Daytona and Talladega. Also a bigger restrictor plate will be used at the restrictor plate events. This was also the Press Conference with “Boys Have at It” LOL

Winners on this date: Buck Baker, Parnelli Jones, and Cale Yarborough.
January 22nd, 1978: Cale Yarborough beats Benny Parsons to win the 1978 season opener at Riverside. Yarborough's win comes in an Oldsmobile, the first for the make since 1959.
January 22nd, 2015: Jeff Gordon announces that 2015 will be his last season competing full-time at Nascar's highest level. Gordon's semi retirement brings to a semi close one of the greatest careers in Nascar history.

Winners on this date: Dan Gurney and Richard Petty.
January 23rd, 2017: Nascar announces a big change to race formats and points divys in the top 3 National Touring Series. Races will now be split into segments with points awarded for each, putting more of an emphasis on each race and the whole season in general.

Winners on this date: Nobody.
January 26th, 1947: Red Byron wins the inaugural NCSCC event, held on the Daytona Beach Road Course.
January 26th, 2011: Nascar announces a change to its points system, the first since the mid 1970's. Under the new system drivers receive 43 points for a win while last place will score 1 point. Nascar also changes the qualifications for the final two spots for the Chase-giving them to the 2 drivers who have the most wins who are 11th-20th in points at the cutoff. The qualifying rules are also slightly changed basing the order in the event of a rainout on final practice speeds and the qualifying lineup being put in order from slowest to fastest.
