QUICK QUESTION ON HOCKEY CARD VALUE! Resell etc.
Hi please answer, I will thank you in advance.
Hi don't do much hockey but it seems that players like Crosby, Conner McDavid, and some legends like Gretzky sell for good money. But the majority of the hockey cards have little resell value. Is that the way the hockey card resell value is, that a few players sell for really good value and the majority sell really low?

With hockey you have pockets of collectors and once those collectors have what they need, the price on a card will suffer. Some unusual cards will sell really well and something better may not even get a look. If you are looking to make money from hockey, buy as soon as it comes out and sell quickly. From a collector's standpoint if I think a price is too high I can wait. Then sometimes there is a piece you just have to hope pops up and pay for it. For example, in my signature the card on the right. I have been waiting to see it and was sick one night late and it popped, usually would never have even known. So to answer your question, timing is everything, especially when the next set is coming out a couple weeks later....

Thanks for detailed reply. I don't think you can ever make money on singles or opened boxes, but it is just nice when cards have some sell value to recoup the money spent.

You're pretty much on the right track. The big name players you mentioned sell well, and always will. The others will sell much lower. There is a lot of hockey cards on the market now and so it makes getting premium value for all your hits pretty much impossible.
Sure, there are those players that might have a huge spike out of nowhere (Pierre Turgeon, this year, apparently) and player collectors will go nuts for, which is super cool to see in the hobby, but the rest follows a similar formula after every new release, and the prices for most players will suffer on the secondary market.
Just some examples of the Turgeon stuff that sold recently, if you're interested:

I think to really make money off hockey cards you really need to know hockey. You need to be able to predict which rookies will turn into stars, win Cups, be Hall of Fame players, be the most popular players with the fans, and buy their stuff when it's first released, hold onto it until for a number of years and then know when to sell at peak value. You need to be really patient and be in it for the long long haul.

This is the way to go. Find which players are undervalued and try to collect them. I was able to get a lot of Duncan Keith and Shea Weber RCs, GU, autos before their popularity skyrocketed. Generally, defensemen will be cheaper to acquire.
Certain teams sell for a lot more than others also. There are many collectors looking for Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Rangers, Minnesota, etc. Big hockey markets for those teams. Player value can skyrocket after a trade/free agent signing. Examples from this year are Radulov and Weber going to Montreal.

Even if you know the game and the hobby, it's still very hard and to be honest, and seems like a lot of stressful buying/selling times to me. Anything can happen in the the game and it's impossible to predict who will turn out and who won't.
Me? I just sit back and enjoy the wonderful hobby. Whether my card(s) are worth $1000 today and $0 tomorrow, it doesn't matter to me. I'm just here to have some fun and meet some other collectors.

Well said @creasecollector. Too many times I get frustrated reading people who look at the HOBBY as a BUSINESS! I'm here to collect my team's cards, and if you think a card I have is worth x amount, and you have cards I need which you think are worth x amount, then let's trade, but, if you think your cards I need are worth y amount, and I should pay you, feel free to keep them!Always looking for Senators cards! Must be a draft pick, or the card is identifiable as a Senators card before I want it!
As most of you know, I suffered a fairly severe stroke in April '25, so mail goes out anytime!

Cards don't increase in price, they hold steady or decrease. If you hold on to a new card, it will decrease. If you buy something older or vintage, it will probably hold steady. It's just not worth holding on to new stuff unless it is for your PC. For the one card you hold on to that will increase over time, there will be 999 cards you hold on to that will lose value.
