    Canadiens Celebration Brings the Boom!

    Canadiens Celebration Brings the Boom!
    By Karine Hains

    If you've read mine and Richard's latest article about Club 1909 and how membership has its rewards (https://www.sportscardforum.com/thre...as-Its-Rewards), you already know a lot about the benefits of Club 1909 but this article is about another one of the perks. See, last season the Canadiens held a Twitter VIP event at the Montreal Casino to reward the most active fans on Twitter, since that event was such a success, the Canadiens decided to hold two of those events this season. As you may know, I was at the event last year and came home with an autographed P.K. Subban jersey. Needless to say I was over the moon and I really hoped to be invited again this season. On January 14th, I received an email from Club 1909 telling me I had once again been selected and I could chose between 2 dates to attend either on February 7th or 27th. As luck would have it, my birthday is on February 8th so I just had to go on the 7th, what better way to celebrate your birthday?

    Just like last season, the event was held in La Zone at the Montreal Casino which meant we could watch the Canadiens take on the Colorado Avalanche on the giant screen while either gambling on the gaming terminals we all had or answering the quiz on Twitter to win various prizes. Once again this year, my guest was my dad as he loves both hockey and gambling and since he's the reason I got so into hockey in the first place, it's only fair that he comes with me to such fun events. This year though, my mother had decided to tag along to and when we got to the Casino, she asked that I show her where La Zone was so that she could join us at the end of the evening. I should have smelt something fishy but I didn't...As soon as she saw the area and one of the organizers, she hurried over to tell them that the next day was my birthday which resulted in me being asked on stage later that night to received more free drinks coupons, vouchers for the Casino's restaurant and a Habs flag while the whole room sang happy birthday to me. Thankfully, no one filmed that...I will admit I was somewhat embarrassed.

    When the clock finally stroke 8 o'clock, we were allowed to enter La Zone to get the festivities on their way. We all received our VIP passes, $25 in credit to indulge in some gaming, 20 Club 1909 points and a ticket to be entered in the draw to win the evening's top prize: a Boom Boom Geoffrion signed and framed jersey. Right by the entrance, all the prizes were displayed and I was happy to realize that Club 1909 had gone vintage for the evening. Not only was Boom Boom the main prize but other prizes included plenty of former Habs great unlike last year when all prizes were from current players. I couldn't help but check out all the goods and here is what was up for grabs that evening:

    -Patrick Roy autographed stick;
    -Patrick Roy signed jersey;
    -Carey Price signed puck;
    -Jean Beliveau signed puck;
    -Yvan Cournoyer autographed jersey;
    -Numerous Canadiens hats;
    -Autographed 8x10 picture of Brendan Gallagher and David Desharnais;
    -Autographed 8x10 picture of Frank Mahovlich;
    -Mini replica of the Stanley Cup signed by all the players of the 1986 cup winning team; and
    -Framed and autographed Bernard “Boom Boom” Geoffrion jersey

    We then took our seats and readied ourselves for the game grabbing drinks and being provided with a regular flow of wings, mini-burgers, prawns etc...Everyone was having a fantastic time until the Avs scored early in the game not once but twice. Thankfully, we had the quiz to keep us entertained and we were all eager to see if we'd win some of the amazing prizes that were on display. As the evening was drawing to a close, I had had every single one of the quiz answer correct but I had not won any prize...I couldn't really complain as I had won something the year before but I will admit that I was still hoping lady luck would be with me again especially since it was the eve of my birthday. At the end of the game, only one prize was yet to be given and that was the evening's biggest item, the Boom Boom autographed jersey. There was no quiz for that one, it was a straight up draw amongst all the tickets filled at the entrance so the odds of winning were about 1:80. When a member of the animation team reached out in the box to pull out the lucky ticket I was almost holding my breath and then the winner's name was read out: Richard Hains! No, that's not me...but it's my dad!

    He made his way to the stage, posed for the photo with his prize and when I went to check it out from up close with an imploring look on my face, he said the words I was hoping for: “Yes Karine, you can have it, happy birthday!”.

    Needless to say I was absolutely over the moon as that prize was worth a cold $1,300 not that I would ever sell it though! It is now hanging on the wall in my living room which can pretty much be called a Habs museum, i'll let you judge for yourself from the picture below...

    In the end, my 37th birthday turned out to be my best yet and that's all thanks to the Montreal Canadiens, Club 1909 and my dad of course! Without being greedy I really hope that I am invited again next season as just like last year, it turned out to be one of the season's highlight for me.
