Who or What’s Behind Recent Card Value Spikes?

Don’t look now, but rent, homes and the cost of living in general aren’t the only prices that have shot up recently; the value of trading cards and comics has skyrocketed in recent years, and it seems like every month auction records are shattered in the collectibles realm.

What led to this unprecedented increase in value? Why does it seem like every week Mickey Mantle’s iconic 1952 Topps card is setting a new record? How have certain comics become paperback mortgages?

We’ll direct your attention to the Federal Reserve.

Interesting topic. I like hearing about the major card sales becoming big stories in mainstream news. It gives a bit of an injection into the hobby. People heard about the Gretzky 10 PSA, and started taking old cards out of old boxes to see if they could find their Gretzky RC's. Obviously they met with disappointment when they went to their LCS and learned that their dog-eared, soft-cornered Gretzky RC wasn't worth $500K, but maybe they buy a couple packs of cards and get the spark going again. It's good for the hobby at large to have these stories.

Recent value spikes on vintage stuff? I seem to recall the Honus Wagner card that Wayne Gretzky partially owning breaking records every time it has been sold since the early 90s so I wouldn't really call this a newer trend. Maybe the stuff has just gotten old enough to become collectible? I mean even the cards from the 1980s are coming back into style and that's saying something.
