Marc-Andre Fleury says likely farewells to Pittsburgh in signature moment with fans

Marc-Andre Fleury’s farewell to Pittsburgh could have come nine days ago.

His final public appearance as a member of the Penguins could have been handing the Stanley Cup off to Matt Murray — itself a remarkable gesture — on the ice in Nashville, Tenn., before he rode off into the Las Vegas desert.

I'm still surprised he agreed to waive that NMC.

Fleury has been a good-to-great goalie in his time in Pittsburgh, but I just can't understand the motivation in wanting to leave a team that will contend for the cup next year, and go to an expansion team.

And before anyone says "he wants to be a #1, and he'd be buried behind Murray" that's simply not true.

Pittsburgh would have had to trade him to someone on his list (which he could have made very difficult by only offering up teams that would never want him, or the Pens would never want to deal him to) by last week, or they'd have to protect him and expose Murray. It's possible the Penguins could have offered Vegas compensation not to take Murray, but I'd expect the price would have been prohibitively high (and rightfully so).

Maybe he's got an under-the-table agreement that the'll flip him to Philly, or something cool like that (I generally dislike all think Philadelphia, but playing for the Flyers so he could try and stick it to the Penguins would be a fun story)..
