    Advice on Vintage Set Building

    Hi collectors,

I'd like to put together a couple of vintage baseball sets (1977 and 1978 Topps), but I'll basically be starting from scratch.

Any advice on the best way to start building? Card condition isn't of paramount concern. It's more for nostalgia purposes.

Thanks very much for any suggestions!

I would try to get some starter sets. With a couple of those you may be able to trade or buy the remainder here or elsewhere. If you go that direction I could likely put together some for you. jon

Yeah getting the biggest lot with the most cards is probably the easiest way to go. Then get the key stars and rookies and then just work on filling out the rest of the set.

As others have said, you can get starter lots of the late 70s for pretty cheap prices. Get a couple of each and then you'll have stuff to use as trade bait in case you find someone else or others working on the same set.
I only ship to the USA. I don't accept cash TTM.

If you're looking for some starter sets I have 550 1971s. 75% of the set.

    I also have about 350 unique 1969s.

Could let them go pretty cheap.

From an economics standpoint, it really only makes sense to just buy the set. You can get a nice '78 set for < $100 and a '77 set is just slightly over $100. You'll spend 2x to 3x that (or more) building it card by card. This is basically true for any vintage set - the whole is cheaper than the sum of its parts.

However, I understand what you mean by nostalgia purposes and if you're still intent on building one card by card, I'd say you're best off buying a large starter set first. If there's any card shops or card shows in your area, you can often find late '70s commons on the cheap. So go with a list in hand and see what you can find. Probably be best off buying the stars on eBay. Good luck and have fun.
