Meet the man who paid $400k for the 2009 bowman chrome mike trout superfractor autograph

The new owner of the one-of-a-kind card is Dave Oancea, known to many as Vegas Dave. It’s his latest — and biggest — addition to an impressive collection of 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Trout autographs. He’s already got eight of the 25 Orange Refractors and one of the five Red Refractors.

Not your normal eBay transaction, it took some time to coordinate and finalize as the seller came over from Taiwan to deliver it to Oancea personally. But now the deal is done, completed in person in Las Vegas this afternoon.

The guy is delusional. He hasn't made "smart picks" in his recent sports betting; he's made stupid picks because they had favorable odds and happened to hit and pay off well. Just like your neighbor never tells you about the times he loses at the casino...only hen he wins. There's a reason he was using invalid SSNs to open accounts.

I highly doubt this card will ever turn him a profit to the likes of what he's expecting it will.

    The guy is delusional.

    Delusional? Maybe. Successful? Absolutely.

He hasn't made "smart picks" in his recent sports betting; he's made stupid picks because they had favorable odds and happened to hit and pay off well. Just like your neighbor never tells you about the times he loses at the casino...only hen he wins.

That's not exactly true ... Dave let's people know in advance of his bets paying off who he bet on ... he was extremely vocal with his Royals, Falcons and Astros picks even when they were underdogs and everyone was saying he placed stupid bets ... and yet those bets paid off in a huge way for him. Now, I imagine he loses as well and doesn't publicize that fact, but he has hit on some amazingly lucrative winners, that's just a fact.

There's a reason he was using invalid SSNs to open accounts.

Wasn't that because he was banned for betting in Vegas casinos and he simply wanted to keep betting in such casinos, so he did so using other SSN's? If so, I don't think that hurts his reputation but strengthens it ... as many will think he had to be amazing at betting to get banned, and they will even like the "rebel attitude" of bucking the system to keep betting. I'm not personally defending his actions, just saying how many will likely view it.

I highly doubt this card will ever turn him a profit to the likes of what he's expecting it will.

No one but the One true God knows what will happen with the value of such a card ... its value could drop a great deal of Trout suffers a career-ending injury or something like that; however, it could also be a $3mil+ card some day if Trout keeps up his current pace and wins a ring or two ...

Personally, what would scare me is that it seems the second highest offer on the card was for $250k ... if it had been for $360k or something I could see justifying an immediate $400k offer, but to top the 2nd higher offer by a whopping 60% is taking a big risk. That is one reason I hate to buy things on "Make an Offer" listings and always prefer to merely win auctions. It's not a big deal if one is investing in a card with an established sale history, like most all cards have, but when you're talking about true 1/1 cards, many of which have never sold before, it's insanely risky as you could be paying a great deal more than what the 2nd highest offer would be for the card ... and as I only buy true 1/1 autographed rookie cards, I always prefer to win auctions and I generally avoid "Make an Offer" listings like the plague.

However, Dave has silly money and doesn't mind taking major risks ... I mean the guy dropped like $250k on his Derek Carr collection and Derek Carr is an extremely, extremely risky investment compared to a guy like Mike Trout, so ... we'll see what happens.

And, again, I'm not defending Dave ... I know a lot of people thinks he's a bad apple, but I can at least appreciate his risk-taking nature, and he's always been nice to me. He reached out to me over Twitter and later via personal email to chat about football cards and sort of compare his Carr collection with my Jameis collection, and while he had some strange takes that I didn't agree with (e.g. Jameis will never be worth as much as Carr because he's black and cards of black QBs never get all that valuable), and didn't appreciate me hitting him with some statistical and common-sense reasons why Carr isn't on Jameis' level as a pure "investment" and why my Winston collection blows his Carr collection away on a card for card basis, he was at least friendly and fun enough to chat with.

I'm not sure about "a couple" but I did hear he paid big money for a fake one and then re-sold it after people told him it was fake ... if that's true, that is horrible as he should have just went to the Police and perhaps even started a civil case against the guy he bought the card from.

Go ahead, keep defending a scumbag.

What's next? Will we have glowing posts about how Bill Mastro is a great ambassador for the hobby?
