So not actually RCs then? Variations aren't RCs generally.

The modern hobby can be really stupid sometimes.

The further I get back into it, the more I'm realizing that.

One would think. But, the Bryce Harper fiasco in 2012 tells me that all bets are off.

True enough though all the base Harper's (Variation #661A) were SP with all the other variations of 661 also being Harper. Both the Acuna and Torres are going to be B variation SPs of ofther player's cards.

Was Topps not able to get them inserted into Topps Series 2 in time so they had to go the SP route or are they just really stupid and thought that collectors would like to pull less of Acuna and Torres in S2?

It's Topps trying to increase demand, and price, of these rookies.
If they cared about the hobby instead of money, they'd wait and put these rookies in the Updated set where they belong.
Collecting Topps Brewers. I PC Jonathan Lucroy, Paul Molitor, Christian Yelich, Robin Yount, and Ken Griffey Jr.
