Help with preserving an autograph.

First, I want to make sure it is known... I know that an autographed baseball should ALWAYS be on a genuine leather ball... Preferably a ROMLB. However, this autograph was obtained by a non-collector, and now I'm stuck trying to preserve it.

My wife purchased a baseball signed by Micky Dolenz (from The Monkees). Before she purchased, she asked the appropriate questions (signed with pen, or Sharpie... Real leather, or synthetic leather... Etc.) The answers were "blue ball point and real leather. Unfortunately, when it arrived, it was blue ball point, synthetic leather, and already smudged, bleeding, and fading. Before she decides if she should return it for a refund (the seller is kind of a friend, and she doesn't want to burn a bridge), she wants to know if there is any way of preserving it.

Any suggestions? Anybody tried something that works (or anything that DOESN'T work)?
