    Konnichiwa!

Hi everyone... as I just joined and was encouraged to make a "get to know you" post, here goes.

I've been collecting on and off since I was a child. When I started collecting, I think my first cards were '87 Donruss. It took me a while to get the hang of it, I had a bit of a collection going.. and then I forgot about it.

A couple of years ago I started back up, so here I am.

I don't have any particular type of card I like to collect, and to be honest, I'm not huge on trading (though I'll trade duplicates no problem). I like to buy big boxes of cards off of ebay for a few bucks and then slowly integrate them into my collection. Are they worth a lot? Probably not. But it's just fun to keep track of all the different cards, and really cool when I find the occasional gold mine (which is really rare and I con't care). I have about 10,000 cards or so, and that's slowly growing as I try to get a handle on it.

My biggest challenge is that I've not found any software at all to actually inventory the cards like *I* want, so I'm thinking I might have to write some. It's always hard to enter or doesn't give me the stats I need or is broken in some way. I have to think about how that's going to work, I guess, but it's a project. My second biggest challenge is storage - they are bulky in, well, bulk.

Other stuff about me: I'm currently learning Japanese, which is a very difficult language, I'm a computer engineer in Austin, Texas at a very well known retailer (I promise you would recognize the name, but that's all I'm saying), I play piano and have a rather stubborn cat.

Guess that's all, nice to meet you.

See https://www.ebay.com/usr/nine_pockets's Items on eBay Instagram:

Welcome! You'll find a lot of collectors here with similar stories, and some with quite different ones (for example, it wasn't until I joined this site that I discovered what a "supercollector" was).

My collection is rather small, so I've just been cataloging it with spreadsheets. But if you do start working on a software project one day and need some testers, I wouldn't mind testing things out. I'm sure other SCF members wouldn't mind, either!

Most of all, have fun here. You'll meet a lot of really cool collectors.

I may take you up on that. I have a few ideas as to how to do this, and I certainly know how I want to design it... we'll see how it goes. I wish I had more time to code. Ah well, a vacation is coming up, and I need to learn React anyway...

Hello, and welcome to SCF duskglow. I do have specific collections that I am always building. However, when it comes to 87-94 baseball cards I do just like you. Buy as many as I can get my hands on, make additions to my growing collection, and then I move the rest. Glad to learn I am not the only one that collects in this way.

    Hi Robert,

There's not a whole lot I feel strongly about when it comes to card collecting, but here's possibly the only thing: with some very narrow exceptions that relate to participating in community activities, there is absolutely no wrong way to collect. And if someone were to tell me that there was, I would immediately - and I don't care how long they've been doing it or how many cards they have - dismiss them as having no idea what they're talking about.

So I collect exactly how I want to. If I wanted to collect every single card I could get my hands on of a *single person*, I could do that. If I wanted to simply get as many cards as I could of just one set, not caring about duplicates, I could easily do that. If I wanted to collect all of the cards I could get my hands on and write my name on every single one, that's my business. Sure, that would destroy any value (because value only exists when there is demand) but the point is that no one could tell me it's *wrong*, because it's not.

So, no, you're not the only person. I collect because I like to and how I like to, and all other considerations are secondary.
