It was announced earlier today that David Wright, a player that has only ever worn a New York Mets uniform, will call it a career after he suits up one final time during the final homestand of the 2018 season.
In what has become an oddity in recent years, Wright showed his loyalty to the Mets organization by playing his entire career with them and they also returned the favor by sticking by him during his injury hiatus the past few seasons.
David’s injury issues started early in the 2015 season as he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and his regular-season ended after only 38 games, but returned during postseason play to make his only World Series appearance. Although able to make a recovery and return in 2016, that season also ended early with a herniated disc and eventual neck surgery.™ He has not played for the Mets at the major league-level since 2016.
In today’s announcement, the Mets stated that they will activate him on September 25 and use him as needed. But, he will start at third base on September 29 in their game at home against the Marlins. That game looks as if it will be his final MLB appearance as he stated that he would call it a career afterwards.
Wright quickly rose to prominence in baseball after making his MLB debut in 2004 and batting .293 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs. He then became a Mets mainstay over the next 12 seasons of play and potentially could have been a Hall of Fame consideration had injuries not put a damper on the end of his career. Whether or not he ends up in Cooperstown is irrelevant at this moment. He will be remembered fondly by Mets and baseball fans alike for maintaining his team loyalty, producing quality numbers, and just being an overall great person that always had a smile on his face.
