Within minutes of cementing himself as a mixed-martial arts superstar by forcing Conor McGregor into submission, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov may have spoiled his briefly promising future by hurdling over the cage and into the crowd to attack his opponent's cornermen, jiu-jitsu coach Dillon Danis.

The post-fight attack ignited a melee around the ring as several members of Nurgmagodmedov's entourage, including cousin and MMA fighter Abubakar Nurmagomedov, jumped into the cage to challenge a defenseless and exhausted McGregor.

Meanwhile Khabib Nurmagomedov continued to pursue Danis before ultimately being corralled by police.

'These guys are in big trouble,' UFC President Dana White said.

Executive director Bob Bennett said the Nevada Athletic Commission intends to file a complaint following its investigation into the actions of Nurmagomedov and his team for setting off a post-fight melee at UFC 229 immediately after McGregor submitted to Nurmagomedov's choke in the fourth round.

Nurmagomedov's $2 million purse has been withheld, and he could face a hefty fine along with a lengthy suspension.

'Khabib diving over [the cage] was ridiculous,' White told ESPN. 'You know, you just won a great fight, you fought brilliantly, you're about to get the belt on and people are going to respect the fact that you fought well and you won the fight. And instead, you dive over the cage and start this huge melee with Conor's corner.

White said three members of Nurmagomedov's team were detained by police, but released after McGregor refused to press charges. White acknowledged Nurmagomedov's lightweight title could be stripped if his actions result in a significant suspension.

'It is going to be ugly,' White said.
