Why are people so shocked that Magic stepped down?

For someone who has been in the public eye for so long, and whose personality has been so plain and apparent for any thirtysomething-plus fan to have witnessed through the years, it's clear that Magic has NEVER had an executive CEO type of personality or makeup -- which is why he didn't do well (and didn't last) as a coach, either. I'm not surprised in the least that he abruptly stepped down as the Lakers' president. He's not a strategic or analytic sort of guy -- he's much more down to Earth, people-focused, spur of the moment. Those aren't the sorts of guys who like to sit around and dictate or negotiate impersonal matters.

Hahaha I thought the same thing when I saw all these people "shocked" by the news. I was more shocked that Dirk decided to retire and not come back for another season. Magic wasn't great and with Lebron being a coach killer / teammate killer / team killer / etc I figured Magic just fell on the sword to get out now before the ship sinks even further.

I simply do not care for the Lakers, including Magic. Not a Lebron fan either.? We really don’t know relationships do not work and after a while. Egos may have clashed. I think the Lakers had a good team going before Lebron, with good players being traded away. Perhaps a different coach would have been better. Personally I think Lebron is overrated as a teammate, though he is a good player.

Walton fired and now there is talk that the Lakers are going to bring in Lue as head coach

Magic was a terrible executive, but it needed to happen to get rid of Jim Buss. At least he stepped aside before he made it worse than he did already.
