In other words, they cheat, because it’s illegal only if you get caught.

The latest instance occurred in mostly plain view during Game 1 of the Columbus Blue Jackets series against the Boston Bruins last Thursday.

Before a faceoff 3:33 into overtime, Brad Marchand stomped on Cam Atkinson’s stick blade just as the linesman was about to drop the puck — without any of the officials noticing. The play was whistled dead because Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was thrown out of the faceoff, but Marchand’s move would have given Boston an advantage had the play started.

“I know him, so it is what it is,” Atkinson said of Marchand, joking about the incident after practice the next day at TD Garden. “I mean, luckily, Bergeron got kicked out of the draw, because if they’d dropped the puck it was going to be 5-on-4, right? Kudos to him for getting away with it.”
