Packs of cards -- so disappointing lately

I realize I shouldn't expect all that much out of standard packs of Topps 2019 -- and maybe it's just that I'm not a kid anymore, so I'm hoping to strike gold every time -- but I feel like everything I've found in packs lately has been disappointing. Has anyone experienced this too? Recently, three packs of Topps yielded me SIX duplicates and every pack seemed to have been organized exactly the same; some low level insert or variation packed into the middle, and a handful of rookie cards that may or may not be worth anything in six years when that player isn't in rookie ball anymore. I don't know. I've only been back into collecting since January, but I find that buying secondary market, on eBay, sadly yields a more exciting experience.

Todd, yeah it's kind of a crap shoot. I see all kinds of hits coming out of products, just not for me. I learned a long time ago that outside of buying a few blasters here and there and maybe one high-end product box a year. I have found the best way to go is buying/trading for what I want on here. That way at least I know what I am getting. Sorry to hear your pack pulling mojo is as bad as mine!

Yeah, I think you're right. I have to maybe buy a pack or two just for the fun of it every once in a while, but shouldn't expect to find a golden ticket like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I haven't tried trading on here yet, I should look into that.

The prices of boxes have been going up and the value has been going down. Don't know how people can still open up boxes especially when there are some great sellers on this site selling awesome cards for great prices. I just buy singles now and I have gotten stuff for the fraction of what a box would have cost. I highly recommend others doing that if you are on a budget like me. More cards for less money!

Your reaction is exactly why manufacturers make mid to high price point boxes. If you want a big hit they got you the manufacturer has got you five red. If you bust low end products your big hits will be few. So you just have to decide the best way to spend the money. I personally like the secondary market ebay especially if you collect a non star player or less desirable team etc.

Best wishes in whatever route you take your collecting.

Thanks, Don. Definitely. I find eBay and card show "dime boxes" to be the best places to find what I'm looking for, especially cards to send out to players to request autographs on. The high-price boxes scare me, I mean -- if I bought a topps tier one and pulled a Sandy Koufax auto that would be amazing, but if I pulled Blake Treinen (nothing against the guy, he's a great ballplayer, but autos like that shouldn't be in high-price boxes) I'd probably feel awful for spending that much money.

I think it's a cool looking card, and hopefully one day it will be worth a few bucks.
