Was waiting for this to become "officially" announced by Panini.

I don't blame Panini. UD has begun to really spew overpriced garbage for the past few years, they need some competition.

Business is business, and no doubt getting Kakko will help out Panini's numbers with the hockey market collectors while also having a bit of an impact on UD's 2019-20 plans. Rangers are always a popular team, Finnish players always get a good amount of hobby love, so good score for Panini. Still not a fan of the practice in general but I understand why it happens.

As a Rangers fan, this sucks. I am disappointed that Upper Deck let this happen.

Let's clear this up immediately, because this applies in all situations where a player signs an exclusive - it is the PLAYER's decision. Upper Deck can't force any player to sign a deal with them, nor they can prevent any player from not signing with them or signing with another entity. Blaming UD says that Kakko has no agency in this decision; guess who's name is on the contract with Panini? He/his agent have every right to listen to offers and to sign with whichever company they like...or (as with Dahlin) not sign.

Unless something gets written into the NHLPA that players can only sign autograph/memorabilia/merchandise deals with licensees of the NHL/NHLPA, this will continue to happen.

This is very true, whether we as collectors like it or not. The player and their representatives hold the cards in these scenarios. The card companies just have to wait and see if their offer will hold up over the other companies. Usually, Upper Deck has no problems securing players, but like we've seen in the past it isn't always a slam dunk.

In this case, Panini won the Kakko sweepstakes.
