A pitcher's dazzling show at a stadium speed pitch challenge earned him a deal with the A's

Never give up on your dreams. Yes, I know that's a cliche, a trope, something we've all heard forever. But it's true.

Two weeks ago, a pair of brothers tried their luck at the speed pitch challenge at Coors Field, as part of a night out at a Rockies game. One of them, Nathan Patterson, lit up the radar gun with some eye-popping fastballs:

A very nice baseball story. Hope he ends up with a good career. At least he has an opportunity to a possible MLB start some time.

23 years old. Probably slated for low A ball, if he pitches at all this yr. Has broken arm?

    Nice story.

no broken arm, assigned to Arizona rookie league. They will take it slow.
Might be oldest player in league.

Cool story and all, but I have a few questions...

    1. He wasn't throwing from a full windup or even the stretch, but throwing off a couple steps/hops. How much will this decrease his actual pitching velocity?

    2. This was flat rather than a mound. How much will the mound increase his velocity? Will 1 and 2 cancel each other out?

    3. How's his control with it?

    4. 96-mph heat is great, but does he have anything off-speed or with movement to go with it? Professional hitters can (and do) figure out straight-arrow heat VERY quickly.

good points. these days the average pitching prospect probably throws 92-94, so he won't be anything that they haven't seen here and there

Radar Gun Hero Who Athletics Signed to Minor League Deal Struck Out the Side in His Debut

Nathan Patterson continues to be an inspiration to the millions of individuals out there dreaming of becoming a professional athlete literally out of the blue.

The Oakland Athletics went out of their way to sign the raw and talented arm after he went viral in July from clocking 96 MPH on the Coors Field stadium radar gun at a Rockies game.

Fast forward roughly two weeks later, and Patterson's debut for his new organization could not have gone more swimmingly. Pitching for the A's Arizona League Gold team against the Cubs' affiliate on Thursday, Patterson struck out the side...against the only three batters he faced.
