    Hello from California

    Hi everyone,

I'm recently getting back into the hobby after discovering numerous boxes of my cards that I collected as a kid in my parents attic. Most of the stuff I have isn't worth much, or really anything at all even, so I'll probably just be giving away a lot of it (or at least what's left after I threw most of it in the recycling bin lol). I've been trying to figure out what to do with my gambling winnings from sports betting over the years, and decided to invest it in some of the nicer cards I could never afford as a kid but always wanted. Now, I'll be focusing my collection entirely on graded cards of some of the all-time greats in baseball, basketball, and football, with a few random hockey cards mixed in here or there. I'm mostly interested in rookie cards, but will also be going after some of my favorite cards from the 50s & 60s, as well as some of the pre-war cards like the 1933 Goudey Babe Ruths and maybe some Ty Cobb and Lou Gehrig cards as well.

Like many of you, I'm very much the OCD type when it comes to a card's appearance and condition. For me, centering (particularly L/R) is the most important factor in whether or not I want a card in my collection. I want good condition overall, but I'd rather have a well centered PSA 8 than a 60/40 or even 45/55 PSA 9 any day. Basically, I'll be going after the highest grades I can afford, but only if they're well centered.

I have a lot of research to do before I figure out exactly which cards I want to add to my collection and what prices I can get them for, but I'm excited to dive back in to the hobby. Baseball cards had a major influence on my life as a child and even helped to shape the career path I've chosen as an adult. I was always more interested in the statistics on the backs of the cards, and at one point I could pretty much tell you from memory the batting stats of any good player from every year by staring at card backs all day long lol. I ended up studying mathematics as an undergrad and statistics in grad school, and now I build predictive models for a living, and those interests all started with baseball cards for me.

I've only gotten a few cards so far since diving back in, but I'm definitely excited about where my collection is headed. So far, I've only bought 6 cards with my winnings, but the list will grow as I just started buying them last week; the highlight of which is a really nice looking SGC 8 Michael Jordan 86 Fleer RC that I'm planning to send off to PSA, which I expect will come back as an 8.5. Here's what I've bought so far:
    • 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan RC (SGC 8)
    • 1986 Topps Jerry Rice RC (PSA 9)
    • 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. RC (PSA 10)
    • 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout RC (PSA 10)
    • 1989 Upper Deck Randy Johnson RC (PSA 10)
    • 1986 Topps Traded Bo Jackson RC (PSA 10)

Looking forward to seeing what's out there and building up my collection. I was a huge Bo Jackson fan as a kid, so I'll be chasing all of his best cards first. I have most of them already, but they're mostly in EX to NR-MT condition. I'll be upgrading all his rookie cards to PSA 10s as I find them.

    Cheers!
    Bo Hunter

Here's a pic of the Jordan rookie I just picked up... I'm pretty excited about this card :)

I'm a graded card collector as well. I have over 800 graded Cowboys in my collection and it continues to grow. If you have any questions, let me know! Have fun here! Rich
