A New York-area high school football coach has been suspended for one game because his team violated the county's 'lopsided scores policy' by beating an opponent by 48 points.

Plainedge High School (Long Island) head coach Rob Shaver is the first person to be punished under Nassau County's three-year-old rule, according to Newsday.

On paper, at least, the game did not appear to be a mismatch, as both teams entered the October 25 contest with undefeated records.

But with his Red Devils holding a 35-point lead entering the fourth quarter, Shavers decided against removing his starters, and Plainedge ultimately won, 61-13.

According to Nassau County rules, a coach must give a valid reason for winning by more than 42 points. The committee in question apparently did not agree with Shaver's reasoning.
