    Out-of-position oddities

Often currently, card companies try to avoid depicting players out of position. At least at Panini, I know we often are told not to show pitchers batting and things like that. But in the past, it was far more common, as I can recall a number of Upper Deck baseball cards in the early 90s where they loved showing pitchers batting.

How many cards can you think of that have an out-of-position oddity? Position players catching, pitchers batting or running the bases, position players pitching, guys pressed into service at a position they've never played before... I'm considering starting a collection of them and would love to know what ones you all know of. Either front or back photo is fine. Here's a few to start...

    1988 Donruss
    Fernando Valenzuela (pitcher batting)
    Orel Hershiser (pitcher batting)

    1990 Upper Deck
    Kevin Gross (pitcher on bases)
    Don Robinson (pitcher batting)
    Fernando Valenzuela (pitcher batting)

    1991 Score

    Doug Dascenzo (outfielder pitching)

    1991 Upper Deck
    Jim Abbott (pitcher batting)

    1992 Upper Deck
    Doug Dascenzo (outfielder pitching)
    Kevin Gross (pitcher batting)

    1993 Upper Deck
    Kevin Gross (pitcher running bases)

    1994 Score
    Jose Canseco (outfielder pitching)

    1994 SP
    Jose Canseco (outfielder pitching)

    1994 Upper Deck
Kevin Gross (pitcher batting... why, Upper Deck?)

    1995 Collectors Choice
    Orel Hershiser (pitcher batting)

    1997 Collectors Choice
    Fernando Valenzuela (pitcher batting)

    1997 Upper Deck
    Archi Cianfrocco (infielder catching)

    2016 Topps Pressed Into Service
    Wade Boggs
    Jose Canseco
    Michael Cuddyer
    Josh Harrison
    Garrett Jones
    Ichiro
    Nick Swisher

You will find a number of variations within the current sets over the years with players playing out of postiion (e.g. has mookie in catchers position)... would be expensive feat to tackle.

This guy basically has a blog for all these guys out of position (and for cards that feature players on very weird teams like Reggie Jackson on the O's)

95 Collector's Choice #163 also depicts Trevor Hoffman batting... well, bunting, so I suppose not too far "out of position" for a pitcher.
I collect mostly baseball (especially current/former Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, and/or Angels) cards/memorabilia as well as football (SF 49ers) cards/memorabilia.

I'll count it. Unfortunately I believe we're heading toward an era where the NL will adopt the DH (followed by the DH being allowed to enter the game in a fielding position without the pitcher having to bat) so pitchers handling a bat will become a near-impossibility instead of just a single-league anachronism.

Okay, score me as intrigued. Per Baseball-Reference, he's only played OF and 2B in a game. Where does him playing catcher come from?

1988 Score Dan Plesac. The Brewers were an American League team then, and last I checked, Plesac was a relief pitcher.
Collecting Topps Brewers. I PC Jonathan Lucroy, Paul Molitor, Christian Yelich, Robin Yount, and Ken Griffey Jr.
