Milestone celebrations for the 1980 USA men's hockey team naturally always focus on the seminal 4-3 victory over the Soviet Union that took place on Feb. 22 in Lake Placid.

The "Miracle on Ice.'' This year’s 40th anniversary is no different.

That Cold War-era game over the Soviets blurred the red, white and blue lines of sports and politics at a time when America needed a lift. It vaulted seventh-seeded Team USA, enormous underdogs against a rival country that had won four Olympic titles in a row, to the gold medal, which it secured two days later with a 4-2 win over Finland.
