Why Why Why are people doing this?
I absolutely LOVED the David Ayres story, and it's awesome that UD made a YG for him.
WHY are people paying $20+ for this card?
More than $375 for the High Gloss!
I want one, but like $5 is my limit for one of these.
Waiting for the hype to disappear and SINK this cards value.

Demand is there for it because his story transcends just the hardcore collectors. People who don't collect hockey cards want this card.
I thought we were happy when cards had value?
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I love that this is happening to this card. It's a hot card right now and the prices reflect that. Good for the hobby!
Yes, eventually these will comeback down to earth when we can scoop them up for our collections, but until then just enjoy the spotlight being cast on this awesome hobby right now.Jhonas Enroth Card Collector & Host of the Hidden Content

The key here is to sell or trade when it is at it's high. I got a nice bundle for his Game Dated Auto over on ePack.

It's a cool story..... and one that will probably never happen again (not sure where it went, but the NHL is apparently taking steps to ensure that an embarrassment like this can't happen again).
That cool story has gotten the guy a lot of interest, from both the usual card collectors, and hockey fans in general. That's increasing demand.
Combine that with the set (Young Guns) which there are plenty of..... and this release is only a week old, so that's driving the prices up too.
Should these cards be worth as much as they are? I mean... if you really want that HG, you know it's unlikely you'll ever be able to pick up a copy after this year. They'll be tucked into collections, and won't see the light of day. Really want one? There's obviously a few people that do....
Even the regular YG. If I take a look at the entire roster of 19-20 YGs - How many of these players will still be in the league in four years? (many won't). It will surprise me there's 25 of them, across all three series, that will sell for more than $10 in the year 2023. It will surprise me if Ayres is not one of the ones that remains a decent seller.
Sam Tageson sells for more than most 13-14 YGs.
Gritty sells for more than most 18-19 YGs.
I can't think of any other "special" ones like this..... but my point with those two: Unique cards and/or cool stories are going to make a card like this more valuable than I think you're giving them credit for.

I think it's awesome anytime a card has value for any reason. In this case the reason for the card having demand->value is super awesome and I couldn't be happier that it's doing well - I would expect it'll go up even higher as people like me who are set builders want to pick up a copy which will create further demand.
I'm honestly completely out of touch with why anyone who collects sports cards would want the sports cards they collect to be worthless?

It's sad that they made a big deal for Ayers, but Scott Foster only got into OPC. I like the story of an accountant better than the zamboni driver
