Does anyone have any tips for autographing hotels? Where should I go, where do I stand, what do I bring, how early do I get there, etc

Welcome in, I don't have any first hand knowledge as I have no clue which of the large number of nice hotels in Chicago host players, but it might help if you mention what sport/city you are hoping for. Smaller markets have less options for nicer hotels to support the team. I.e. Buffalo is much easier to track down than NYC.

Yeah, sport and city would help this a lot. Time varies from sport to sport.
Most hotels won't let you in the lobby at all, and some might not let you on the property at all. Dallas-area ones are at times close to impossible, while Boston ones (at least when I lived there 15 years ago) would let you set up close to the entrances outside.

I used to do this a lot in the past mostly hockey in various cities (mostly Nashville) and done a few NHL Drafts. The best thing is to see if you can find out which hotel they are staying at. As some teams have certain hotels they stay at. Example the wings might stay at the Renaissance while the Stars and Pens stay at the Radisson like a block away both one block from the arena. While the Ducks would stay many blocks away at some Suite Hotel and the Panthers would stay at the Hyatt etc. Now the biggest question you need to know is do the players walk to the arena or do they take a team bus. Like all the Florida Panthers all walked a few blocks to the arena and it was pretty easy to obtain auto's. Dallas players like the Pen players would walk to the arena while occasionally the main star might just hop on the team bus so you could not accost them for autographs. The best thing to do is find a person that does autographs for the particular city you are looking at and see if they are willing to share tips. As many folks are very unwilling to share while others will gladly share their expertise with you. Just need to find the right folks and learn the ropes.
You only just mentioned the hotel once you find that you need to have a 2 minute drill on how to ascertain your auto's quickly as you will usually only have a matter of seconds to get the player while he walks past and moves onto the next person seeking auto's at all. Best of luck and let us know how you fare.
