Hockey Diversity Alliance cuts ties with NHL, citing lack of support

The Hockey Diversity Alliance announced Wednesday that it will "operate separate and independent of the NHL" after months of negotiations with the league.

"The Hockey Diversity Alliance is grateful for the support from the public we received. Unfortunately, the support we hoped to receive from the NHL was not delivered and instead the NHL focused on performative public relations efforts that seemed aimed at quickly moving past important conversations about race needed in the game," the organization said in a statementhttps://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/30066233/hockey-diversity-alliance-cuts-ties-nhl-citing-lack-support

I can imagine that this was the sanitized and publicly acceptable version of this announcement. I can imagine the f-bombs being thrown around during the real meeting that generated this decision.

It is too bad something better couldn’t come out of this.

i'm only vaguely familiar with the HDA as it seemed to be something that sprouted up during the bubble when I was fairly checked out of hockey (unrelated reasons)

What were their demands specifically (if they ever made them specific) ?

I'd also like to know if it was just the league (owners) involved in these negotiations or was the player's union a part of this as well? Obviously, supporting diversity in hockey is very important but I don't think it is something that the league can do without the support of the players. Very surprised that the NHLPA was not mentioned as part of this. Maybe they will have more to say in the coming days.

This was a couple of weeks back, but I'm not shocked at all.

I'm sure the NHL would have no issues putting a bit of money up to promote hockey as a great sport to play - regardless of the colour of your skin.

There were demands for education / training (for everyone). I can't see that being something that the league would strongly object to... but it's easy to imagine that an agreement on timelines would be tough.

I'm guessing the NHL balked at the idea of affirmative action hires, or putting in rules that say teams must deal with a particular percentage of vendors who are visible minorities.
