Talking Coming back to FBC hobby...best Topps Chrome replacement/cheap-ish break for chasing refractors?

Yo! Kind of thinking of coming back to the hobby. I used to bust 5-6 boxes of Topps Chrome (and Platinum) each year when they were a thing to make the base and insert sets and chase refractors and autos. I pretty much stopped when Chrome went extinct, as I’m not really a team collector, a PC guy, or a high-end collector, I just really liked Chrome as a set and rookie refractors as a chase.

Coming back, what has kind of taken Chrome's place as a go-to for a nice (but not $$$$) base set and desirable rookie refractors? I see "Prizm" and "Mosaic" mentioned a lot and a lot of those rookie cards are gorgeous...are they "Rookie Card" or "Rookie Year"? I also see most online retailers stock a lot of blasters/blaster boxes and "cellos" (rack packs?) now which is new to me...the last time I was buying (2011-ish?) the online sites didn't usually list retail product much at all, or only after the season was over and the clamor for hobby boxes dies down. You’d rarely see blaster boxes for sale along with hobby boxes, in season.

So all that said: What is my best bet to get back in to the hobby by opening a few blasters/packs and looking for some cool rookie refractors? Really just looking to bust some packs and see what Panini is doing with the football license these days. If I hit a nice rookie, awesome. This class strikes me as pretty deep, or at least that's my impression after the (fantasy) season :P

    Cheers for any input/advice!

You are definitely right about the wholesalers and sites not carrying much retail but since it is hot and it affordable compared to actual boxes everyone is carrying them. If you can the best thing is to try to find them at your local stores so you can get them at cost versus paying the insane markup that the wholesalers and folks are asking on these packs. Of course most stores are dried up if you do not get them as they are stocking. I think you will be happy with either route be it Prizm or Mosaic etc. Just can you handle the dollars that go with it. Of course if you hit a nice rookie your going to be sitting pretty with a huge payday.

This year you can usually get at least a Tua, Jason Herbert or Joe Burrow in a box! CeeDee Lamb, Antonio Gibson, Jonathan Taylor, Jalen Hurts, needlessly to say you can get your money back. Where I live there are no packs or boxes, they are gone before they make it out for display!

    Thanks, Gents!

I am likely in the "no stock" boat where I am, on the East Coast of Canada. It is a barren landscape for football cards, to say the least.

I pretty much always sold my rookie auto hits ASAP to either pay back my set boxes, or buy more :P

    Cheers!

Donruss Optic will be coming out in February. Costs less than Prizm and has a better design in my opinion. I'm not onboard the Mosaic train and Prizm is too expensive. Contenders Optic is also coming out but.... ehhh.
