Is Submitting Cards to be Graded Dangerous

I have a couple of relatively rare cards that I would like to be graded by PSA, but I'm worried that somebody will steal it in the mail. Does this ever happen? Or am I just worrying for nothing?

Legit fear for sure. I always worry about my cards not making it to them or back to me. Add in a third party submitter and it has to survive four different trips through the mail.

P.O. looses enough of my eBay purchase’s as it is and something I sent to PSA usually means it’s a very special card to me and I have probably bought several just to get one nice enough to submit and likely will have a hard time getting another as nice or it’s rare, expensive, etc and also hard to replace and even with mail insurance I’d much rather have my card than the money.

Also it means I am trusting PSA to take good care of my card while in their possession during the year long wait until they get around to grading it. If one was to think of the worst that could happen the possibility’s are endless….. PSA could have just flat out misplaced or lost a card and it sits in the system longer than necessary or forever, has a earthquake, fire or robbery, geeze the amount of value just sitting around in their facility, this could be better than a big time bank heist. Scary to think about

All that said, with as many possible opportunities for something to go wrong, so far, I have not had a problem with the cards I have personally sent to them or the cards I have sent through someone else who sent them for me.

PSA has graded millions and millions of cards successfully. My advice is to make sure you fill out your submission form correctly and make sure you insure your package.

Probably depends on how rare and valuable. If they are numbered you are protected somewhat since if they appear on eBay or another place after being stolen you can get them back but if you are that worried (and with some cards it is totally justified) they do in person grading and drop offs at a lot of the major card shows around the country. So depending on where you live it might be safer and cheaper to just take a quick drive and get them graded in person.

Well, and agree with the fears but as it has been pointed out they have graded millions of cards and the problems are small. If you complete the paperwork correctly and the insurance part, if PSA damages or otherwise loses a card, they will reimburse you up to the amount you claimed on the order form. USPS will also pay a claim if you insure the card and something happens in their care, custody or control. That doesn't help you get it back, but it is at least a little compensation.

Hand delivering to a facility, or on scene grading at a show are other options, as pointed out above. I have sent in a 1941 Play Ball DiMaggio, some 1930's card a 63 and 69 Mantle, some 54 Topps Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, and it worked out ok. Those are not the biggest and baddest cards in the world, but were expensive to me and I had no issues.

What ever you decide, insure it, use really good packaging and of course, pray...
