Retired NFL safety William White dies at 56 after six-year battle with ALS

William White, an 11-year NFL veteran who started at safety for the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII, has died at 56 following a six-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Primarily known for his time with the Detroit Lions, who drafted him out of Ohio State in 1988, White had 20 interceptions over his career and was generally regarded as one of the tougher safeties in football before retiring in 1998 after his only Super Bowl appearance. He also played for the Kansas City Chiefs.

'I loved William,' said Lions executive Chris Spielman, a former teammate of White's in Detroit and at Ohio State. 'We shared experiences of joy and sorrow on and off the field. He was and always will be my brother.

'I am forever grateful for the special moment last year when he was able to be by my side during the Pride of the Lions ceremony at Ford Field. I can't wait to see him again when he will be free from ALS. May God's peace rest upon his family.'
