A Pretty Cool New Item If You "Askey" Me...

The latest item to enter our vaults of goaltending history at Heroes of the Crease (https://www.facebook.com/heroesofthecrease) is here and I am very grateful as it was a generous donation to the museum project by a private collector. It is not for sale, trade, nor donation.

What you are looking at right now is a set of game worn Vaughn Vision goalie pads utilized by Tom Askey in the 1996-97 season with the Baltimore Bandits in the AHL. It features excellent wear, and at one point had all traces of "Vaughn" either painted over or removed (side Vaughn letters removed, both the front logo tag and front printed logo were painted over black at one point). This is a really cool item from a goalie with a short NHL career.

Born on October 4, 1974 in Tonawanda, New York, Tom Askey was drafted 186th overall by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 1993. Going through four years at Ohio State University before turning pro, Askey made his pro debut in 1996-97, spending the year with the Baltimore Bandits in the AHL. He also got to represent the United States at the World Championships, facing Latvia in his one appearance. In 1997-98, Askey spent most of the season with Cincinnati, though got his NHL recall late in the season.

On March 13, 1998, he made his NHL debut for the Mighty Ducks. Replacing Mikhail Shtalenkov between the pipes for the 3rd period vs Dallas, Askey stopped 4 of 6 shots in Anaheim's 6-3 defeat. Askey went on to appear in 7 regular seasons by the end of that season. The following season, he once again spent a large portion of the season in the AHL, though got into one NHL playoff game in relief of Guy Hebert. He remained in the minors thereafter, first spending a year in the IHL, then signing with Rochester in 2000-01 and winning the Best Goaltending Duo Award (with Mika Noronen). After being signed by Buffalo in 2001, he spent four more seasons in the Sabres' system before heading overseas. He played in Finland, Switzerland, made a brief North American return to the UHL, and then played his final season in Italy and England before officially retiring from play in 2008 after winning the Elite Ice Hockey Championship with Nottingham. Askey currently coaches goaltending and is also an avid musician.

In his NHL career, Tom Askey appeared in 7 games, recording an 0-1-2 record with a 2.64GAA, and a 0.894% save average. In one playoff game, he recorded an 0-1 record with a 3.99GAA and a 0.818% save average.
