Never attribute to malevolence what can easily be understood as incompetence.

The referees may not always be on their game but lets face it, if there was a fix for the Stanley Cup I doubt Vegas, Dallas, Carolina and Florida would be the final four.

You may not bet, but if you're like anyone else on here and you buy wax, you're certainly gambling.

I don't.. If you mean buying card boxes and packs; I've already done this in the past, but one day I realized I was never lucky with my pulls, so from that moment on I've decided to only buy the Patrick Roy cards I needed/wanted for my pc. Better that way, for me anyway. But whatever, I get your point nonetheless.Last edited by sleepn0t; 05-22-2023 at 07:27 PM.

I don't really get how it would be done in hockey but the NFL, NCAA, and the NBA with the way the refs act they can totally turn a game around. It isn't 100% as the team still has to score but in football you can basically call a hold whenever you want. I don't even watch football unless somebody has it on so I haven't viewed many lately but out of the few I have there have been several instances where the announcers are completely baffled as to what the refs are calling for a penalty because the replay shows the exact opposite.
Plus this year the NFL had a ridiculous amount of games that were close all year. A statistical improbability and surprise surprise it had only happened last season after they heavily pushed for betting on games/commercial deals.Selling All My Cards Here------>Hidden Content

Rigged at what level? If the suggestion is that the NHL (or book makers) wants a particular team (or teams) to get to the final (win?) - I don't believe there's any chance this is true. Too many people would have to be involved, and it would get out. It would destroy the sport (this would be true of any sport, not just hockey).
I have no reason to believe that there are any refs or players or coaches (or whomever) fixing games - but that notion is much more believable. Got in a little too deep with the wrong person? Point shaving has been going on as long as gambling on sports has been a thing (which likely started the same afternoon as the first sport).
The books don't need to rig games to make money. While (of course) they could lose a lot on any particular outcome, the lines are designed in a way that they come out on top most of the time. For example: An over/under is set to 6.5. That number didn't come from out of nowhere. The odds makers know that that's the number to get an approximate 50/50 split on bets. They'll typically pay $180 on a $100 bet..... so if you bet $100 on the over, and I bet $100 on the under - and there were 7 goals total: You get $180 (a nice $80 profit), I lose my $100, and the books pocket $20. Multiple that by millions :)
Point spreads work the same way. Odds on games (win / lose) are a little different, but they're essentially the same thing. The line is set to get relatively even money & liabilities on both sides, and the casinos come up the middle.
It's not a lot different from playing roulette. At any given time you can win a fortune, but the way the tables are designed: The house will come out ahead over the long haul. The 0 (and 00, depending on where you're playing) means that the odds of you winning your bet are slightly less than the value of your win.
You don't need to rig sports to make money as the book maker, you just have to be good at setting lines.

I believe this is the correct answer.
But I can't wait for the AI to officiate games in the future where hockey will be played only in powerplay but everything will be 100% fair ans square(?).
But for real - where humans are involved there will be mistakes involved.SCF Threads: Hidden Content ; Hidden Content
