Why is Beckett on drugs? (pricing complaining)
I have a 96-97 UD Collector's Choice MVP gold parallel insert of Gretzky. High value is $8. Multiplier says 2.5 to 6 times basic inserts. So, $20 to $48, right? No, Beckett says $15. ??? Which one is right? I don't want to trade away a $48 card for $15, and I don't want to ask $48 for a $15 card...even though the lowest value on the multiplier is $20! This isn't the only example either. 1983-84 OPC says Gretzky subset cards are $5 each, but there isn't a single Gretz from that set that books less than $20. I has a confuse! Halp!

I used to use the book for the vintage stuff, I didn't have online at the time, but now I do have online that's what I use. My point is that the online guide is wrong, according to the rules it sets out. If you go to 96-97 Choice, select MVP Gold, there's info under "Header Lines" that says "*GOLD: 2.5X TO 6X BASIC INSERTS". $15 for the Gretzky makes no sense, as the lowest value the header line gives is $20. If you use that info, the prices are low value column $7.50 - $18, and high value column $20 - $48. $15 makes no sense, it doesn't match any of the values the multiplier gives. Golds were one in 35 packs, so $15 for that card just doesn't add up.

Look, they are meant to be used as a guide, not an absolute. For lower end cards-inserts, they are fine as a bench mark. Really, with the amount of dealers on here, thats what you'll find being peddled anyways, Thing there is, most times if youre patient you can buy those same cards at probably half BV. For autos, vintage too, you dont use Beckett. Then again on this site, you certainly dont trade for vintage. many collectors have no idea what card condition is.

I know it's not iron clad final word on prices. But I trade, not sell or buy, so having accurate prices is vital. If the guide can't get it right what are we supposed to do? If someone wants that card, is it $15 or $48? If I'm trading I don't want to take advantage of someone and I sure don't want to be taken advantage of. Like I said, I don't buy or sell here or anywhere else. If someone wants the card, and there are two totally different prices in the online Beckett what do we do? That's what I'm annoyed about.

Whatever works for you is what you shoudl do. As long as you keep doing it the same way it all good.
People have been using Beckett for years to take advantage of people forever.
1) Find those crazy cards that are priced high in the Beckett price guide but sell low on eBay and trade according to Beckett. Of course, if the situation were reversed, they would use eBay, not Beckett.
2) Beckett takes your money for pricing, but their OPG and Beckett magazine have two different prices for the same cards. You would think they would be on top of it, but they have always had issues over the years

Consider your cards as pieces of art. It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
I have always said Beckett is like what someone is willing to pay for a single card if that card is the last card they need in a 200 card set. If they need that last card to finish the set they are willing to pay XY amount for it. 99% chance you can get that card somewhere else for less than half of whatever Beckett says.
If people are buying older cards they should have done enough due diligence to know what the card is worth and what they are willing to pay. If you are confused about why a card in Beckett says $15 when the math says $48 then you assume it's $48 and you ask for around that much. If the recipient says no, that's too much then you know the card is closer to the $15 than the $48.
I do not use Beckett at all because it is obsolete in my eyes. It's absolutely worthless in my eyes. I understand if people want to trade in BV and that is fine with me. You see it less and less as time goes on.
