Warning- Huge Grant Hill eBay rant....

    Okay

I'm a Hill collector. I love my Grant Hill cards. I don't mind paying a bit more than usual to get something I really want.. I've probably spent close to $2000 on Hill cards since returning to the hobby (which is my date of joining this forum)

But ™™™ is going on :(

Case in point, a few minutes ago I lost an auction for an 06-07 SPGU 3 color patch /25.
For background info, the same seller was selling a handful of other SPGU patch cards from the same set, same numbering, and similar colors. These auctions all ended a few minutes ago.

    Ben Wallace SPGU 3 color /25.. $18

    Tracy McGrady SPGU 3 color /25.. $20

    Kobe Bryant SPGU 3 color /25.. $30

    Jason Kidd SPGU 3 color 1/25.. $36.50

    Lebron James SPGU 2 color /25.. $43

    Grant Hill SPGU 3 color /25...... $52 ???

Just to show this is no isolated incident..

Recent 1 of 1 auctions for Kobe Bryant:
    Bowman Magenta plate $40

Recent 1 of 1 auctions for Dwyane Wade:
    52 Style Black plate $72
    Topps Total Cyan plate $41

Recent 1 of 1 auctions for Lebron James:
    Topps Total Plate $70
    Ultra plate $55

Other notable 1 of 1 auctions:
Topps First Row Allen Iverson/Chris Paul Plate $54
Topps Total McGrady yellow plate $29

Recent 1 of 1 auctions for Hill
Topps First Row Cyan Plate $154
    Topps Total Yellow Plate $115
Finest Superfractor $250+ (it has moved off the completed auctions though)

In fact, the only printing plate that has actually sold for more than a Hill card recently was an autographed Shannon Elizabeth for $300. The closest was a Larry Bird plate from 92 Courtside (which ended at around 100).

    I mean... come on..........??

What's insane is that it isn't one rich person overpaying for these cards, nor is it even 2, or 3, or 4... Either there is a glut of shills going after Hill auctions, or it happens to be an age of collecting where Hill cards only trail Jordans in terms of value on a per-set basis..

Hill is a very popular guy. I collected him for a time too and amassed 50 inserts, which are NFT. : )

    Hey I understand that :P

It just boggles my mind that his popularity would exceed that of Lebron or Kobe at this point in time.. Or we just have a few fanatical collectors that are out to complete some master collections or something..

Don't underestimate the (purchasing) power of the hard-core player collector to drive prices of second-tier star cards to first-tier star levels. The idea that there would be hard-core Hill collectors with deep pockets out there doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Hill also has a bit of snob appeal in that he's a very classy guy.

Consider also that comprehensive player collecting for megastars simply isn't feasible due to the volume and price of these cards. I'm a huge Tim Duncan fan but have never even attempted to collect his inserts because there's no point--the BV of his checklist imported into Beckett's MyCollections setup (which would not include values for the *really* high-end stuff that's too scarce to price) is five figures. And he's a half notch below Kobe, LeBron, et. al. I can only assume Hill's injuries have depleted his card checklist in an analagous way to which his actual career has been impeded, making it a more attainable goal.

    Those are my off-the-cuff thoughts.

^ Yeah I agree, sort of

It just seems so crazy that a player like Grant Hill would dominate the secondary market for basically any card not in Exquisite..

And it's only in recent years that Hill has had fewer cards out in circulation (and even then, he shows up in a majority of the sets released in some form); he is as difficult as any player to make a comprehensive collection out of, perhaps moreso because of the inflated prices..

I really wish that price guides would take these things into account :[ but that's another rant entirely

Wow, good post. As some people have mentioned... Grant Hill is very popular, which is one reason. Also, there are some people that will spend WAY TOO MUCH for a card than it's really worth. I don't know why though, they just do. It doesn't make sense. It's one thing to spend a few dollars more for something that you need for your PC, but when you are going to the extreme by spending 2 TIMES more than something's worth for your PC or just tradebait is LAME and POINTLESS. I hear ya, and I hope the best for you in your future bids on Grant Hill cards.

Well I suppose my complaint is that these people are not getting credit for what they've done

In short, Hill cards SHOULD have higher BV's than those Kobes or Lebrons, especially when even in my limited research I've shown it to be true.

Beckett just automatically ranks their Jordan > Lebron > Kobe > Wade > Everyone else prices and it is not representative of market value at all..
