A formal announcement could come as soon as Monday. Raptors sources would not confirm to the paper that O'Neill will be the team's next head coach, but all signs point toward it becoming a reality, according to the newspaper.

Three finalists for the post -- O'Neill, Seattle assistant Dwayne Casey and Bucks assistant Sam Mitchell -- were in Toronto this week for interviews with the Raptors.

O'Neill, 46, has never been a head coach in the NBA. Prior to joining the Pistons, he was an assistant with the New York Knicks. O'Neill does have NCAA head coaching experience at Northwestern, Tennessee and Marquette.

He played a big role with the Pistons the past two seasons under former head coach Rick Carlisle, with Detroit winning 50 games each season. Despite that success, Carlisle was released by the Pistons, who replaced him with Larry Brown.

The Raptors parted ways with coach Lenny Wilkens, the all-time victory king, in April. The Raptors won just 24 games last season, finishing seventh in the Central Division.

Don't know much about O'Neill, but it's nice to see someone have a chance to be head coach who's never been one

He was a head coach at Northwestern, but wasn't very good. But he was a great bench coach, and could be a good NBA head coach.
