The 49ers have some "dead money" that counts against their cap for this year. "Dead money" means past money owed to players no longer on the team that counts against the cap therefore limiting the money they have available to sign Peterson and their draft picks.

    exactly,

we dominated in the 1980s, had a fabulous early 1990s (capped by the 1994 run)

but, the consequence of all that was cap money that kept being delayed and pushed back.....

now, we are paying the price

but it was well worth it, b/c when you have the chance to win the Super Bowl, you go for it all!!!

You can always re-build (just ask the Chicago Cubbies, who have been re-building for almost 100 years)..... but when you sense you have a dynasty, you do whatever it takes to keep it intact for as long as possible.

8/6/04 update: boy, this is getting ugly.

Peterson is still holding out, and isn't even appearing in camp.

the beauty of football is that one player doesn't make that much of a difference, esp. when he's not a QB or RB

    Let Peterson sit and mope

is woodson sitting out for raiders charles woodson>?

yup...I think the Raiders are fed up with Charles Woodson

If I were the Raiders, I'd have him sit out the whole year, not trade him, and just pay him

In sports...you have a "window" of playing time.

In football, once you are over 35, your career is pretty much over. Look at Jerry Rice, one of the best ever conditioned athlete, and Roger Craig - perhaps the best ever conditioned athelete.

Craig was out of the league by the time he was in his mid 30s.. and Jerry is still going strong at 40-y/o, but he's now slow.

by forcing Charles Woodson to sit out a year, you force him to lose some skills, and subtract another year...

Look at Drew Henson -- he missed football for 3 years while playing baseball...then came back this year. Reports out of the Dallas training camp in Oxnard, CA, is that Henson is absolutely horrible. He cannot hit open receivers, has problems taking snaps, can't read defenses, etc...all understandable, since he hasn't touched a football in 3 years...

so, let Charles Woodson hold out!

8/27/04: Peterson is back in camp, signing a 1-year contract at something like $6M-9M

The Niners offered him something like a 6-year, $48M with a $15M bonus, and he turned it down

    hahahahaha.....boy, that's funny

but, for what it's worth, at least he is now in camp
