Young Blackhawks gain confidence despite loss

Loss in Game 1 may teach young Hawks a lesson

VANCOUVER, Canada -- Chalk it up as another learning experience for the Blackhawks.

Their 5-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals Thursday night might have been a disappointing start to the best-of-seven series, but it was another step in the development of the NHL's youngest team.

"They're receptive to learning and to understanding," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "We made a lot of progress in our team game and understanding situations and the importance of big shifts. There's a message going forward for sure.

Game two was amazing turn around. I wonder how the Nucks will respond in Hawksville!

We shall see as the Hawks just came out and crushed them early. Of course the Nucks tried to come back but ended up with the puck in the empty net to squash those hopes.

Typical Vancouver -- get a lead, and then choke. Hey, I've followed the Canucks since their inception and it's their life story. It doesn't help that this year they seem to be playing "Swedish" hockey a little too much.

Chicago is becoming quite the Cinderella team, I'll have to say.

Let's see if Vancouver smartens up tonight.

Thankfully, they did smarten up. They were smart and shut down the Black Hawks in their own building for half the game which gave the fans nothing to cheer about. That in itself is one of the keys for winning a game on the road.

I wish I could say it was a beautiful game, but I can't. Too much of that pushing and shoving stuff, a defense that can't keep the opposition out of the crease, and a front line that would rather pass than shoot are going to be what kills the Canucks if anything does.

The other thing that really bugs me about the games I've been seeing so far is the large number of broken sticks -- it's time the League banned them in favour of real sticks.
