The messy bankruptcy filing by the Phoenix Coyotes’ owner, Jerry Moyes, meant to facilitate the club’s sale to James L. Balsillie and a move to Hamilton, Ontario, has an intriguing sidelight. Wayne Gretzky, the N.H.L.’s career-leading scorer and managing partner and head coach of the Coyotes, stands to profit if the bankruptcy proceeds.
