Depends how bad it was torn. You could rehabilitate it and it would take less time than if you had to go in for surgery. Just ask a doctor when you get it looked at and he'll give you an accurate time of recovery because he'll know the exact extent of the injury. So it could be anywhere from 1 month to a year depending on how bad it is and which ligament.

I had a torn ACL when I was in high school. When I finally went in for surgery they ended up having to put a cadaver ligament in my knee and do an extensive minisectomy (removal of damaged miniscus or cartialedge). The total recovery time for the surgery was about a year, but I wasn't a martial arts practitioner either. Good luck with that, man.

I tore my PCL back in January playing Broomball. I knew immediately when it happened because I heard a small pop and then I folded.

Good news is that it only took a couple of months to heal up. Six months later, it's as if the injury never happened. I can even lock in triangles again full blast.

So basically... if it's your PCL, I think you'll be ok. Good thing it wasn't your ACL or MCL! Also, that's awesome you can get an MRI. My insurance just didn't cover enough of it. MRI will be good for your piece of mind.

Thank goodness you had it checked out. I had a guy fall into mine when I was wrestling back in high school. I never had it checked out. Long story short is I wish like heck I had, constant problems now that I'm much older. It def stinks getting old.
    Best of luck.

Sorry to hear about the injury, I had an ACL reconstruction in each knee and both times the recovery time was about a year. It's hard for orthopedist to tell the extent of the damage without an MRI and sometimes even that doesnt give a clear enough picture and you can need explaratory surgery. Knees are really tricky to deal with, but whatever the outcome of the MRI and operation or not, please take care and follow the instructions you are given as well as you can i.e. if you have to do physiotherapy, stick with it and apply yourself. It's boring but it will pay in the long run.
