Sakic Expected to Announce Retirement this Thursday

    TSN.CA STAFF

After 20 NHL seasons, Colorado Avalanche forward Joe Sakic may be ready to hang up his skates.

The Avalanche have called a news conference for Thursday at 3pm et/12pm pt, where according to local reports they will announce Sakic's retirement.

The Burnaby, B.C. native would leave the game as one of the most decorated athletes to ever take to the ice. Sakic hoisted two Stanley Cups, participated in 13 NHL All-Star games, and was named tournament MVP for Canada's gold medal winning team in the 2002 Olympics.

This sort of feels like the true end of the Nordiques....

Thanks for all the memories Joe and Quebec/Colorado were lucky to have you for those 20 years. Here's to a truly wonderful athlete.

I just can't picture an Avs player on the ice without wearing #19.

If it wasn't for Steve Yzerman, Sakic would have been known as the best captain of his era

I would rank Sakic at the same rank as Yzerman. Both were franchise players to their team, did great stuff on/off ice, won lots of cups. Plus I will always remember the Detroit vs Colorado series.

Great player. In the same category as Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, Pierre Turgeon, Pat Lafontaine, Brian Leetch, etc. He stayed healthy in most part of his career, and finally got some recognition once arrived in Colorado (Petr Stastny never got it in Quebec... what some USA market can make!), a bit like Patrick Roy switched from "star" in Montreal to "superstar" in Colorado. Sakic has a nice career.
