How do I get rid of groundhogs?

What type of damage do groundhogs do to yards? I walk in my back yard and find new hole's (covered creaters) divits. I nearly twist my ankles when trying to cut the grass. I bet you all are going to say shoot (kill) it. I live in a residental neighborhood, I don't own a gun. My neighbors wouldn't appreate a gun going off anyways, and I don't want the police to show up at my house. The groundhog comes out mid evening. He comes pretty close to the back door. I am thinking of traping the groundhog, but how? and what do I do with it?

They have traps you can use...steel wire traps, but not sure how expensive they are. We borrowed one to trap a coon one time. Then you can just take it off to the woods somewhere and set it out. I think I'm going to have to borrow it again because I actually have a groundhog too.

    Other than that, no clue.

Thank you very much for all your help. Do you know what damage they do to yards? I didn't know where start. I just contacted Animal control and left a message. I guess they leave and set the trap for you. Free!

Ah nice...I definitely let them take care of it then. We borrowed one from a friend who coon hunts, had to do it all ourselves. Of course he kept the coon to train his dogs, so we didn't have to get rid of it.

In my yard, he's just dug a tunnel under my shed...other than that, he hasn't done much. They're not like moles that will dig holes all over your yard, they usually just have a couple in certain places. Ours hasn't caused any problems other than the big tunnel and he's been around for more than a year now.

Have you ever seen the movie "Caddyshack"? Little plastic explosives? lol Honestly, I have no clue, but hope you can figure out a humane way to take care of the problem! Good luck!

we had a few moles and my dad has a few of the traps, you dig till you find the hole that leads to the tunnel (wont be far down) you can get it with your hands. You set up the trap then fill it around with dirt but still be able to see half of the trap (not the clamp just to top) put a bucket on top so it's dark and it will look like a nat. Environment to them and they will come back up and get clamped in the trap, end of problems.

Groundhogs hate moth balls, put some around the holes and in the holes, and they will leave.

.22 rifle with some rat shot. It's quiet doesn't travel far and is quite effective.
