    Luongo out with rib injury

    Matthew Sekeres

VANCOUVER — Globe and Mail Update Published on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 2:22PM EDT Last updated on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 3:56PM EDT

The Vancouver Canucks will fly to California later Wednesday without their star goaltender and captain.
Roberto Luongo has been sidelined by a hairline fracture of a rib, suffered in the third period of the Canucks' 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last Saturday. The injury occurred when a shot by Niklas Hagman hit the seam of Luongo's chest protector.
Luongo faced 42 shots in a 5-4 loss to the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night, and didn't speak with reporters after the game because he was receiving treatment.
The Canadian Olympic hockey team hopeful, who signed a 12-year, $64-million (U.S.) contract extension in September, hopes to return next week. Andrew Raycroft becomes Vancouver's starter, with Cory Schneider expected to be called up later today or tomorrow.
Luongo will skip Thursday's game in Los Angeles and Friday's contest at Anaheim. His status for Sunday's game with visiting Colorado will depend on how he feels.
“There is no definite timeline, because it's really about the amount of pain that you've got there,” Luongo said after Wednesday's practice. “I'm definitely not playing these next two games.”

Tough break, but at least it's a day to day, week to week type thing and not MONTHS!!!

Raycroft has played well his brief games with the 'Nucks. Unlike a lot of other people, I think he'll do fine. People seem to remember Raycroft's bad seasons and forget the good ones he had.
