  1. The true worth of a prize

You've probably read by now the story of a 12 year old girl who caught Ryan Howard's 200th career home run ball in a game at Florida earlier this season. While it has a happy ending, the circumstances that led to the conclusion will only paint the Phillies in a negative light yet again.

As has become customary when a player hits a milestone HR, the girl was asked to return the ball, ostensibly so that Howard could add it to his trophy case. Howard reached 200 HR faster than anyone ...

  2. The limit of greed

I just read a blog entry on Yahoo! Sports that disturbed me.

Matt Carson, a September call-up for the Oakland A's, hit his first major league homer Sept. 21 at Oakland, but the fan who caught the ball isn't willing to hand it over unless he gets $10,000.

    Let me repeat that. $10,000.

Talk about being greedy and selfish at the same time! Carson has played 7 seasons in the minors before the A's gave him a chance at The Show, he's worked his tail off to fulfill ...

  3. There's a time for letting go

If you ordered WWE's Breaking Point PPV on Sept. 13, I'd not blame you if you asked for a refund from your cable provider after the main event.

Nearly 12 years after the infamous 1997 Survivor Series in Montreal, WWE returned to the scene of the crime for the first PPV in Montreal since No Way Out in 2003. Once again, the main event was marred by a screwjob finish that actually benefits no one this time.

CM Punk was defending the WWE World title vs. Undertaker in a ...

  4. Retirement isn't forever

So Brett Favre won his first game with the Minnesota Vikings. Big freakin' whoop! You and I know that if last year with the NY Jets was any indication, Favre will flame out sometime around Thanksgiving, the Vikings will go 0-December, miss the playoffs, and we'll have to go through the whole soap opera all over again about whether or not Brett wants to come back, this time to play out the final year of his Vikings deal.

That makes him no different than any number of boxers and wrestlers ...

  5. Even managers have to develop

The NY-Penn League's Tri-City Valleycats ended the home half of their season Sept. 1 with a 4-3 loss to Abderdeen, ensuring a 3rd straight last-place finish in the Stedler Division. In the majors, a last place team can't draw, and even if you're a playoff contender, such as the Florida Marlins, the locals are indifferent because management has squandered the talent that brought the city 2 World Series titles (1997 & 2003) and don't want to deal with it again, even though the Marlins are getting ...
