19yo driving and texting hits and kills a person then flees scene gets

A measly 5 stinking years for it!!! Maybe if they start giving these moronic idiots life for murder they would quit yacking and texting on their cell phones while driving things like this could be avoided. For all you who love to talk and text while driving remember those innocent lives you put at risk.

It looks like he got more time for fleeing the scene. You usually don't get that much jail time for criminally neglegent homicide.

I'm not saying he should have gotten a 5 year sentence (should be life), but if the victim was crossing not in a crosswalk, then that may be why it was only 5.

I get that they need to bring awareness to the dangers of texting while driving, but I kind of feel that locking him up in prison for five years isn't going to make him a better person. Sure he should have to be punished, but maybe reduce his sentence and make him perform other services like helping to educate others about the dangers. I don't know, I'm on the fence about this really. I'm not sure what he best thing to do is.

I wonder what the typical punishment is for people who accidentally strike and kill pedestrians and stay at the scene who weren't texting.
