GA Tech students want to carry guns on campus
As much as I despise 99% of what the republican party stands for I'm going to take my hat off to them for helping out this time around. Every time I turn the news on there is always someone getting robbed at Tech.

Since Federal gun laws prohibit handgun purchases or ownership until age 21 then a limited amount of students would even be eligible to carry.
How about a significant increase in police presence? Reduce the campus police man hours in daytime and increase man hours for night time or periods of high crime. A college campus is such a microcosm of society. It is so contained and defined. How could a competent police force not be able to effectively patrol it?

A compentent police force would help out. However I know first hand GA Tech police are very incompetent not to mention racist. If the would spend more time chasing criminals and not racially profilling people mabey their campus would be safer. I'm just saying....

Incompetence is an issue and needs to be addressed with discipline and firing. Racial profiling is an issue, no doubt. Again, there is someone at the top of the food chain that needs to be dealing with it.
If parents/students want to get the attention of the GT staff then they need to take action. A protest is fine but if you really want to get their attention then you hit them where it hurts...in the pocketbook. A few lawsuits for failure to provide a safe campus would help. A few thousand transfers for the spring semester would help too.
I am not sure handguns is the answer. I wouldn't want my child going to college where a bunch of college kids are packing.

I believe that is some states you are not allowed to cary guns on educational facilities. I have no idea if GA is one of them. This is a dumb idea especially since some of you are saying that race is an issue on campus. This can bring more violence thatn protection.

Atlanta is a pretty diverse city. I can't really say the school has any more of a racial problem than society as a whole. It's just their police dept. I am all for people having the right to defend themselves. The state of Georgia is pretty gun friendly why can't their colleges be too?

I am just saying, do u really need a lot of students and visitors carrying guns on campus? If you let this happen there is going to be a lot of guns and no control of it on campus. I think the solution is to use more resources during the time of high crimes...use surveillance cameras, etc

I don't have a problem with survelliance camers in high crime areas and I also think that potential criminals would think twice about robbing someone if they knew that there would be a greater chance that their potential victim would be armed.

At my son's college they have an escort program. If a person feels threatened or unsafe they can call for an escort either by campus police or by a student group member that does it. Also, good lighting helps to reduce crime. I am not sure how well lit the campus is, but criminals tend to avoid well lit areas.
A campus that glows like a nuke went off there, high police presence after dark and safety-in-numbers would do more to reduce crime than armed students IMO.

Neal Boortz had a great piece on his radio show today about the violence at GT . Let the students arm themselfs and the Crime against them will stop ! That way the next time the police come many minutes after the crime they'll have something to clean up, A dead thug !
But it does my heart good to see stories like the GT thing turn out like this mugging that went bad ..lol
