Depends what you're getting signed. A plain old-fashioned Bic ballpoint pen is usually the preferred way to go on a ROMLB. Sharpies will tend to fade on a ball or turn the ball yellow.

A sharpie is usually preferred for many other things... photos, cards, jerseys, bats, helmets, equipment.

Silver or gold metallic markers... the silver sharpies tend to be fairly unreliable, but there are all sorts of other brands of metallic marker available out there for a cheap price.

Obviously you'll want to keep any autographs out of direct sunlight as the sun is harsh and can fade a signature on just about anything... even if it's behind glass, in a UV protectant case, etc.

On a baseball? Definitely a simple ball point pen.

Cards and light photos, helmets, etc.? Sharpies work fine, but I'm starting to love the Staedtler.

Darker things where you want gold or silver? I love the SRX Metallics, but I know some people here prefer the Elementz. Paint pens work too, but they require more prepping.

I use a Staedtler when getting any kind of glossy card signed. That way i don't need to 'prep' the cards.

Staedtler not only for glossy cards, but for chrome cards like Bowman. They look snazzy that way

I get all my photos signed with sharpie and have never had to prep a photo.. I think with some cards you need to rub them down with an eraser though.

Check The Autograph Card's website...they sell them 4/$10, which is the best price I've found on them if you figure shipping.
