A little bit of selective memory by the McCain campaign. They were floundering until they selected Palin as VP. After her selection they were on the cusp of winning until the financial crisis hit and McCain suspended his campaign to support the bailout, which hurt him more than anything else.

The conservatives have much better options than Palin for 2016, so this is just a sideshow.

I lost respect for Palin when she quit as Governor to try and gain stature nationally, when she obviously needed more governing experience.

Palin is far from an idiot. She's a talented politician who has been destroyed by the media. Sure she's said and done some stupid things, but so has Nancy Pelosi and for the most part, Pelosi gets a free pass from the media.
