When you return on ebay, do you ship first, or get paid first?

I recently received a cad that was damaged, I asked if I could return, he sent me this message.

ok, send me back the card but I dont refund shipping, with all pleasure I give your money back. Sorry I must pass that one, great day!

I never have had to do this before, so should I ask him to send paypal first to be safe? Or is it protocol for me to send the card back first?

i always read the auction description to see if returns are accepted. if they are and he says to mail the card back to him for a refund, be sure to put a tracking number and insurance on it. that pretty much protects you on your end of the return.
