An actor who appeared alongside Tom Hanks as a Somali pirate in the blockbuster film Captain Phillips has been jailed for assaulting a man so badly he was left brain damaged.

Mohammed Abdi, who had a minor role in the 2013 action film, fractured the man's cheekbone by kicking him in the head before bundling him into a car in Rusholme, Manchester, with two accomplices.

The 27-year-old was jailed for two-and-a-half years for his 'deplorable' attacks by a judge who said he was a fan of the movie which was filmed in 2012.

Manchester Crown Court heard how Abdi and two others attacked the man outside a fried chicken shop at 6am on March 2.

Kicked unconscious, the victim, with whom Abdi had previously been involved in a fraud case, suffered a brain haemorrhage.

In August the actor was involved in a separate attack in which he used bottle to slash a man's arm at a bakery in front of horrified staff and customers.

David Temkin, defending, said there was 'another side' to Abdi, who had the 'privileged experience' of nine weeks filming in Morocco after being cast in Captain Phillips.

Sentencing the criminal to two-and-a-half years behind bars, Judge Martin Rudland said, referring to the film's final scenes: 'Was he in the capsule at the end when the Navy Seals were trying to get in?

'When I watched this film I thought where have they got these fantastic Somali actors from? They are extremely convincing.'

He added it was a 'great shame' to see the man facing jail.

'It's a whisker between behaviour of this sort and death, but you were completely unmindful of that,' the judge said.

A 58-year-old Florida man allegedly looked at pornography before attacking another man and trying to rape him and steal his money Sunday afternoon.

Phuc Kieu's alleged victim took money out of a Gainesville ATM at 4:25pm, a police report from the Gainesville Police Department says.

'The defendant [Kieu] parked his vehicle (green Honda Civic), laid the driver's seat all the way back and proceeded to watch homosexual pornography on a portable DVD player,' the report says.

It continues 'As the victim passed the driver's side of the vehicle, the defendant exited, grabbed the victim, punched him in the mouth and grabbed he bag containing the money the victim withdrew.'

Kieu, of Orlando, then allegedly tried to undress the man, who was able to get out of Kieu's Civic, the report says.

At the time, Kieu also allegedly tried to take the man's backpack from him, which contained the money from the ATM.

The man shouted 'Rapist' when he dashed to shopping center, and a witness told police he saw Kieu in pursuit of the man, the report says.

'At some point during the struggle, the victim's money was taken approximately $220,' the report says.

The Gainesville Sun, which earlier reported on the arrest, said police had verified Kieu's name.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane announced Monday that five men have been arrested over the past week for child pornography charges.
The arrests are part of a recent sweep by the Child Predator Section.
Kane says the five men are Brian David Bradley, 45, of Baldwin Borough, Allegheny County, Preston J. St. Clair of Ellwood City, Lawrence County, Allen Perreault, 50, of Leola, Lancaster County, Thomas Muller, 33, of Philadelphia and James Miller, 60, of Mount Carmel, Northumberland County.
Officials say Perreault allegedly used a peer-to-peer network in order to make files which contained prepubescent females engaged in graphic sexual acts, available for download.
Agents conducting an undercover investigation successfully downloaded the files through the computer's IP address and identified Perreault's Lancaster County residence as the source.
Perreault was arrested and charged with 25 counts of possession of child pornography, one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility.

A California man who is accused of brutally killing his estranged wife with his truck might have fled to Mexico, authorities said.
Cesar Castillo, 37, struck his wife with his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck more than once Friday evening, according to the Chula Vista Police Department. The woman, identified by 10News as Leonor Castillo, died from massive head and internal injuries, authorities said.
“One of the witnesses saw the truck that struck her drive southbound on Elm, do a U-turn, continue northbound past the woman on Elm, do another U-turn and then drive through the yard over the victim, striking the victim again,” Lt. Fritz Reber of the Chula Vista Police Department told Fox 5. “So, it was obvious to the witnesses it was intentional.”
“I’m here every day and I can’t believe this happened right here," neighbor Jimmy Gonzalez told Fox 5. "It’s so peaceful in this area, what happened, ya' know?”

The couple had been separated for one year, cops said. Authorities say they believe Castillo may have tricked his wife into meeting him by suggesting they buy Christmas presents for their three children, Fox 5 reported.
“He was jealous she was attempting to move on,” Lt. Reber told Fox 5. “They had been broken up for about a year. He coordinated a meeting with her under the pretense to go buy Christmas gifts for their mutual children.”
Castillo did indeed pick up his wife, but soon afterward she got out of the truck and started walking.

"From what I understand, she was on the street over there walking and he came around the corner and hit her — from what I was told — and she landed in my grass," neighbor Jason Rasmussen told 10News.
Anyone with any information on the suspect should call (619) 585-5665. Loved ones have set up a fund-raising page for Leonor Castillo.
"She's a beautiful young girl, full of life, vibrant, loved her children, loved her parents," a friend told 10News.

A Connecticut mother and son are facing charges for stealing thousands of dollars worth of valuables from their neighbor's home on Thanksgiving night, police say.

It was just hours after the Strain family had given Laurie Eddings, 50, and her son Christopher Warren, 31, a Thanksgiving dinner that the mother and son duo burglarized the home of their, once friendly, Milford neighbors, NBC reports.

Two teenage thugs who attempted to steal a car by holding a medical student at gunpoint were forced to give up on their crime when they could not figure out how to operate the stick shift.

Anthony Evans-Warner, 17, and his 15-year-old partner-in-crime set upon a first-year resident at the Baylor School of Medicine in Houston as he was set to leave for the weekend, police have said.

When the teens discovered that they did not know how to drive the car, they threatened the medical student with the gun to force him to show them how to drive manually.

A 22-year-old man was found guilty on Monday for suffocating his teen girlfriend to death after she told him she was pregnant and wouldn't have an abortion.

The body of 14-year-old Shaniesha Forbes was found charred and stuffed in a suitcase that washed up on Brooklyn, New York beach in January 2013 and an autopsy revealed she wasn't actually carrying a baby.

Christian Ferdinand, the older boyfriend she met through Facebook, was arrested four months later in Maine and confessed to the crime.

'He intentionally smothered a 14-year-old girl to death and burned her body to get rid of the evidence,' prosecutor Robert Walsh said during the trial. 'He had a problem that needed solving, he didn’t want to pay child support, and Shaniesha got in the way.'

It took a jury just an hour on Monday to convict Ferdinand with murder, and he now faces between 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced next month.

A man accused of raping and setting a Kansas woman on fire in Wichita has been charged in her death.

Charges against Cornell McNeal, 26, were amended Wednesday to include one count of capital murder or an alternative count of first-degree murder, Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office spokesman Dan Dillon said.

Letitia 'Tish' Davis, 36, died on Saturday, a day after McNeal was formally charged with attempted capital murder, rape and arson related to the Nov. 14 attack.

District Attorney Mark Bennett hasn't decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Police said McNeal was linked to the attack by forensic evidence obtained after the woman was taken to a hospital.

Investigators believe she was attacked following a 'random encounter' with the man, but no details have been released.
