Welders Make $150,000? Bring Back Shop Class
"(by Josh Mandel, The Wall Street Journal) – In American high schools, it is becoming increasingly hard to defend the vanishing of shop class from the curriculum. The trend began in the 1970s, when it became conventional wisdom that a four-year college degree was essential. As Forbes magazine reported in 2012, 90% of shop classes have been eliminated for the Los Angeles unified school district’s 660,000 students. Yet a 2012 Bureau of Labor Statistics study shows that 48% of all college graduates are working in jobs that don’t require a four-year degree.Too many young people have four-year liberal-arts degrees, are thousands of dollars in debt and find themselves serving coffee at Starbucks or working part-time at the mall. Many of them would have been better off with a two-year skilled-trade or technical education that provides the skills to secure a well-paying job.
A good trade to consider: welding. I recently visited Pioneer Pipe in the Utica and Marcellus shale area of Ohio and learned that last year the company paid 60 of its welders more than $150,000 and two of its welders over $200,000. The owner, Dave Archer, said he has had to turn down orders because he can’t find enough skilled welders."

My parents were both staffed at community colleges and four year universitys and this is certainly the shift, especially at community/junior colleges.
More two year degrees that are very specific niche jobs across all walks of life - city development, golf course, water tech, health care functions, traditional trade skills, auto, office admin, etc
It is really what they have had to do to stay alive and compete - the programs and offerings are better now than they ever have been.

Probably most of the socialist programs you are talking about are good ideas gone bad or corrupt, i.e. social security is probably one you're going to pull out of your hat.

No I see CC higher than high school. I just picture this as an extension of high school. People have no passion to be there just there to be there.

Right...around here most people go for their trade programs. If you are looking to get into business you go to a four year school. If you are looking to get into CAD or welding or construction you go to a 2 year. If you want an engineering degree you go to a four year.
It's whatever floats your boat I guess.

Taxing 529 plans to help pay for this is ridiculous. Also taxing the business owners and then making them pay more for better educated employees makes little sense. They'll just hire more immigrants and high school dropouts.
