50 years from now cards of today would still be in very good shape?

I don't think there is much worry about that. Ever since the explosion in the early 90s, I don't think there is ever going to be a shortage of cards in good shape. There are too many "investors" that stockpile stuff for there to be a shortage of good condition cards. You can still find tons of worthless 25 year old cards in pristine condition, and I dont think that is going to change anytime soon.

Yes, free packs are just base. But you can use the base to exchange for a base foil parallel once you collect 10 identical base cards of a player. So free packs are still "worth it" to open.
